Identity-Based Habits vs. Goal-Based Habits

Feb 17, 2026

The Psychology

Most people focus on goals.

But research in behavioral psychology shows identity-based habits are far more sustainable.

Instead of asking:

"What should I accomplish?"

Ask:

"Who am I becoming?"

Example

Goal: Write a book.

Identity: I am a writer.

Behavior: Writers write daily.

Action Steps

Choose one identity.

Examples:

• I am a disciplined investor
• I am a creative entrepreneur
• I am a calm leader

Then ask daily:

"What would this identity do today?"
